Tri-Ace Star Ocean Developer Suffers Losses From June 2021 – Tri-Ace, the developer of the Star Ocean game series and Valkyrie Profile, has just released a financial report revealing that they lost money from June 2021 to June 2022.
According to his report, his income decreased by 42.9% in that one year period, from 2 billion yen to 1.25 billion yen. The situation in which a party has more expenditure than assets. This news is both surprising and concerning, given that tri-Ace is nearing the end of development for the latest Star Ocean series, Star Ocean: The Divine Force.
Many media and fans assumed that this loss was due to the discontinuation of their free-to-play game service, Star Ocean: Anamnesis. The game for smartphone users includes microtransactions via the gacha system, which is undoubtedly a source of revenue for the developers.
Unfortunately, Square Enix has announced that its Star Ocean: Anamnesis service will be discontinued globally in November 2019 and in Japan in June 2021. The similarities between the game’s ending and the period in tri-financial Ace’s statements confirm fans’ concerns about the gacha game’s contribution to the company’s revenue decline.
Fans of JRPGs will recognize this Japanese developer from the Star Ocean game series, Valkyrie Profile, and Radiata Stories. The majority of his games are published by major companies such as Square Enix, Konami, Level 5, Sega, and others.
The most well-known is the Star Ocean game series, which has reached its sixth installment with Star Ocean: The Divine Force, which will be released on October 27, 2022.
In addition to new games, tri-Ace is working on remasters and remakes of its previous releases. Star Ocean: First Departure R, the first game in the Star Ocean series to be remastered for the latest consoles, is one of them. On December 22, 2022, tri-Ace will also release a remake of the 1999 game Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth.
